Korea, Japan, China Agree to Advance Trilateral FTA

The trade ministers of Korea, China and Japan exchanged views on the framework of their economic cooperation and pledged to launch a joint study on the trilateral free trade agreement, in Hua Hin, Thailand, on Oct. 25, on the sidelines of the ASEAN-related meetings there.

According to the joint statement adopted by the ministerial meeting, the three leaders recognized the importance of a trilateral investment framework which will be instrumental for further strengthening the economic partnership among the three countries, and agreed to reach a substantive agreement by early 2010.

The ministers reaffirmed the consensus reached by Korean President Lee Myung-bak, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama at the October Beijng summit. The consensus had called for the joint study on a trilateral FTA by government officials, businesses and academic participants from each of the three countries.

As a follow-up to the consensus, the three trade ministers concurred to task senior government officials to start discussions on how to proceed with the joint study, with a view to launching the first such study meeting in the first half of 2010.

They also agreed to oppose trade protectionism in all forms, uphold a fair, free and open global trading and investment system, and seek an ambitious and balanced conclusion to the Doha Development Round.
