Using the Metro/Subway
1. Buying your ticket
2. Entering and Exiting the Gate
3. Getting on the Subway
4. Transfer
5. Arrival
 |
1. Buy your subway ticket first. Standard tickets can be purchased at either ATMs or the ticket office. Your fares could vary depending on your destination station so please check it carefully on the fare table. Passengers can use prepaid transit cards until the balance on the card is exhausted, and they can add more value afterwards. For more detailed information on ticket sales, please refer to the section on Guide to Train Ticket section. |
 |
2. Please make sure that you know the direction to your destination before you get off the train and that you pass through the turnstile in the right direction. Feed the standard ticket or the magnetic ticket with a magnetic stripe on the back-side into the card slot on the gate. Plastic card type tickets should be scanned through the sensor. Tickets will come back out of the slot after you insert them into the entry gate. Please make sure you take it with you until you get off the train. |
 |
3. When the subway is pulling up to the station, take a step back and make sure your feet do not fall into the space between the platform and the vehicle. When the subway door is about to close, don¡¯t try to force your way onto the train. If it¡¯s too full, please wait for the next train. Before riding, make sure it is heading in the direction of your destination station. |
 |
4. If you need to transfer to another subway line to get to your destination, please check the transfer station on the subway map and find the right stop at which to transfer. You can easily get onto the platform for the transfer station by following the signs marked: ¡°Transfer¡± and ¡°Direction to Transfer¡±. You can make your transfer without passing through the turnstiles so you do not need to buy a separate ticket for transfer purposes. |
 |
5. When the train pulls in at your destination station, check the exit in the direction of your destination and walk through the turnstiles by reinserting the ticket into the card slot or putting the card up on the sensor. If it is a standard ticket it will not come out after you pass through the turnstiles at your destination station. |

2. Using the Railroad Service
Railroad Route Map:

If you want to explore other cities outside of Seoul, the most convenient way is to use the Korean railroad system. The map above shows you the cities accessible by train. Because Busan, Daegu, Pohang, and Daejeon have many scenic sightseeing spots, even many native Koreans vacation at these locations.
Q. Where can I buy a ticket?
A. Buying train tickets is easy, as tickets are sold at several subway stations' ticket offices in areas like Seoul, Yongsan, Yeongdeugpo, and Sinchon Station. You can inform the ticket officer where and when you want to go, and he/she will tell you the available times. You can also make online reservations at http://www.korail.com.
Q: What is the KTX?
A. KTX, or Korean Train Express, provides passengers with high quality, fast transportation service. Unfortunately, it is more expensive than taking the standard train. You can view timetables, price guides, and other information about KTX at the official site, http://info.korail.com/2007/eng/eng_index.jsp.
