The Korean Honor Scholarship Committee extends an invitation to Korean and Korean-American
undergraduate and graduate college students to compete for the year 2009 Korean Honor Scholarship.
The Scholarship was first established in 1981 with the gift fund of one million US dollars donated
by the government of the Republic of Korea
to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the opening of diplomacy between Korea and the U.S.A.
In 1985, half a million US dollars was added to the fund by the Korean government, and in 2003
another 0.8 million US dollars was added in celebration of the centennial of Korean immigration
to the United States. In 2009, Korean government made the total fund 2.75 million US dollars
by adding 0.45 million US dollars to the fund. The scholarship is awarded to encourage outstanding
Korean students to achieve their highest academic performance and develop leadership qualities
for their future professional careers.
The Korean Honor Scholarship Committee has awarded 2,415 scholarships to outstanding Korean and
Korean-American students over the past 28 years. To be eligible for consideration, applicants
must be attending college or university in the U.S.A. or in Canada and must have an overall grade
average of 3.5 or higher. In addition to the academic achievement, an essay, a letter of recommendation,
awards, honors, performances and extracurricular activities are reviewed for selection. Approximately 135 scholarships will be awarded this year.
