1. Passport Application

A) Documents Required :

1) An Application for Passport

* The purpose of this English version of passport application is only to be used as for English native speakers.
* Please do not use this version of application if you are applying for passport in our Consulate in New York or Los Angeles.

* All the applicants should know their exact resident number of Korea (Áֹεî·Ï¹øÈ£) and their exact address of permanent residence in Korea (º»Àû). Otherwise, they are required to submit their Family Census Register (°¡Á·°ü°èÁõ¸í¼­).

2) Two (2) Identical Color Photos :

- The photos on white background should be less than 6 months old. (Size: 3.5 x 4.5 cm)
  The size of the face should be approximately 2.5 x 3.5 cm and should display the front of the individual's face.
- Hats, head-gear, and sunglasses are not allowed.

3) Both the original and a photocopy of the passport (the pages with personal information)

4) Fees and other required documents (specific to each category)

* Male applicants who are between the ages of 18 and 35: please refer the following item B.
* Fees should be paid in cash or money order, payable to the Korean Consulate General (personal checks are not accepted).

5) Processing time may take from 1 to 4 weeks, depending on each personal background check.

B) The following individuals must submit additional documents:

1) Male applicants who are between the ages of 24 and 35:

- Proof of the extension from military services

(a copy of the page of the passport on which the embarkation records is stamped or the certificate of completion)

- Applicants who have already completed their military services do not need to submit this document.

- Applicants who have not yet completed military services must apply for a circumstantial extension when submitting the Application for Passport.

- For detailed information regarding military services, please contact the military service section at

2) For those who apply for a passport after reaching the age of 14 and the separation of accompanied children from a parent's passport: a copy of the Family Census Register (°¡Á·°ü°èÁõ¸í¼­).

3) For the Addition or Deletion of Married Name: A Certificate of Marriage or Divorce or a copy of the Family Census Register (°¡Á·°ü°èÁõ¸í¼­) in which the fact of marriage or divorce is registered.

C) Application by mail:

1) Please make sure that you enclose all documents listed above and a stamped envelope with a return address.

2) The application process will be placed on hold if a stamped envelope with a return address is missing from the application package.

3) For the secure arrival of your passport, express mailing services, such as the U.S. Postal Service Express Mail, Federal Express, UPS, DHL, or Air Borne, are recommended.

2. Extension of Validity

Request for extension of validity can be submitted 1 year before or after the expiration date of the current passport. However, only a one time extension is allowed due to the laws that state that the validity of a passport cannot exceed 10 years from the issue date.

3. Application for Travel Certificate

A) Documents Required:

1) Passport Application (Application Download)

2) Two (2) Identical Color Photos:

- The photos on white background should be less than 6 months old. (Size: 3.5 x 4.5 cm)

The size of the face should be approximately 2.5 x 3.5 cm and should display the front of the individual's face.

- Hats, head-gear, and sunglasses are not allowed.

3) Both the original and a photocopy of the passport (the pages with personal information)

4) Processing Fees and issuing day

- US $7.00 (In cash or money order payable to the Korean Consulate General only; personal checks are not accepted.)

- In the case of a lost passport, the wire charge of $10 will be added.

- It may take up to 7 days.

5) The following individuals must submit additional documents:

- Permanent Residents: a copy of the front and back of the Permanent Resident Card

- For those who return to Korea to stay:

- A copy of your visa or permanent resident card.

- A copy of your one-way airline ticket to Korea.

- Stolen/Lost Passport (Consulate's form): A report explaining why and how the applicant's passport was stolen or lost.

- The applicant must appear in person at the consular office.

6) Application by Mail:

- Please make sure that you enclose all of the documents listed above and a stamped envelope with a return address.

- The application process will be placed on hold if a stamped envelope with a return address is missing from the application package.

- For the secure arrival of your travel certificate, express mailing services, such as the U.S. Postal Service Express Mail, UPS, DHL, Federal Express, or Air Borne, are recommended.

Entry Formality

:: Alien Registration

A Korean embassy or consulate can issue two types of visas: a short-term visa for the visitor who wants to stay in Korea up to 90 days or a special long-term visa for periods longer than 90 days. A visitor with a special long-term visa is required to apply for an alien registration at a local immigration office within 90 days of arrival.

:: Customs

A written baggage declaration must be submitted to a customs official upon entry. Passengers must clear customs through either green, white, or red channels. Passengers who have no channel, and those declaring non-duty-free articles should use the white channel. Those who are suspected of making false declarations or of carrying prohibited articles will be directed to the red channel. If a passenger declares non-duty-free articles voluntarily, the declared amount will be accepted and the clearance procedure will be expedited.
 

Duty-Free Articles

·  Visitor's (non-resident's) goods which will be taken out of Korea upon departure.
(The total quantity of the goods should be declared for duty exemption.)

·  Goods which were declared upon departure from Korea and are being brought back.

·  Goods totaling US $400 or less which were purchased or acquired outside of Korea.

·  I bottle (not over 1 liter) of alcoholic beverages

·  200 cigarettes (50 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco)

·  2 ounces of perfume

:: Animal Quarantine

All live animals and animal products entering Korea must be accompanied by valid certificates issued by the exporting country's government.
Declare all import animals and animal products upon arrival to the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service, where they must be inspected. Cloven-hoofed animals and their products that are shipped from import-restricted areas will be sent back or destroyed.

:: Plant Quarantine

Passengers who carry any plants or soil including fruits (mango, orange, papaya, etc.), vegetables, seeds, orchids, nursery stock or cut flowers, etc., must describe the items and immediately declare them upon arrival.
